Summary

The world’s leading expert on habit formation shows how you can have a happier, healthier life: by starting small。

When it comes to change, tiny is mighty。 Start with two pushups a day, not a two-hour workout; or five deep breaths each morning rather than an hour of meditation。 In Tiny Habits, B。J。 Fogg brings his experience coaching more than 40,000 people to help you lose weight, de-stress, sleep better, or achieve any goal of your choice。  You just need Fogg’s behavior formula: make it easy, make it fit your life, and make it rewarding。 Whenever you get in your car, take one yoga breath。 Smile。  Whenever you get in bed, turn off your phone。 Give yourself a high five。

Change can be easy—once it starts, it grows。  Let B。J。 Fogg show you exactly how。

Good ideas, but this book could have been half the length and still made the same points。

I think this book was far too lengthy for the content it was delivering。 The actual content is very similar to a book I read during army, called The Power Of Habit。 Ultimately it felt like a repackaged version of that (tho I'm not sure which came first so maybe that book is the copycat。 BUT I did prefer that book despite it being much longer in length)。 The approach in Tiny Habits is to stake habit formation to another existing behaviour。 A habit contains of 3 elements1。 A cut (or trigger)。2。 A I think this book was far too lengthy for the content it was delivering。 The actual content is very similar to a book I read during army, called The Power Of Habit。 Ultimately it felt like a repackaged version of that (tho I'm not sure which came first so maybe that book is the copycat。 BUT I did prefer that book despite it being much longer in length)。 The approach in Tiny Habits is to stake habit formation to another existing behaviour。 A habit contains of 3 elements1。 A cut (or trigger)。2。 A habit (or routine)。3。 A reward。Ultimately forming a habit is changing one of the 3 and wahlah! You have successfully formed a habit。 Fogg's approach uses the last trigger type as the fundamental basis of habit formation。 For instance, you want to make flossing you teeth a habit。 Fogg tells you to make a tiny habit by using the following recipe format: "After I。。。, I will 。。。"So for this example, "After I brush my teeth, I will floss one tooth。" Then you do this for like 5 days。 After the 5 days, you floss two teeth (The idea being that starting is usually the hard part, once you make starting a habit easy then following it thorugh is easier。 I am inclined to be in agreement with this principle。" Fogg argues starting small and choosing habits that are easiest to start with。 It works because it takes willpower out of the equation。 Instead of meditating for one hour, you start with 1 breath and work your way up - but you do it everyday。 -- Cue Bojack Horseman quote -- "It gets easier。 Everyday, it gets a little easier。 But you gotta do it everyday。 That's the hard part。 But it does get easier。"Fogg also places a lot on emphasis on celebration。 The reward part。 So Dogg says create a ridiculously over-the-top physical action。 This is something I'm gonna try because I don't do it currently。 So yeah - Personally, I feel like I have adopted a ton of good habits (mostly a morning routine) since December of last year。 I don't think it was because of this book, but I do find myself applying many of the same principles。 Now it's about staying consistent when performing the habits, because there have been periods where I fall off my 5:30 wakeup-stretch-meditate-don'tcheckphone routine that I have created。 So yeah, I'll definitely try to apply some of the principles I am learning。 。。。more

There is a lot of good information here。 The only reason I gave it four (instead of five) stars is that it is unnecessarily repetitious。 The book should have been cut down by at least a third, if not half。 I've tried, as the author suggests, adding three new good habits using his method。 After a couple of weeks, you are supposed to evaluate, and learn from the experience, and tweak your method to get the best performance。 I have found his method to be very helpful。 Now, I want to experiment with There is a lot of good information here。 The only reason I gave it four (instead of five) stars is that it is unnecessarily repetitious。 The book should have been cut down by at least a third, if not half。 I've tried, as the author suggests, adding three new good habits using his method。 After a couple of weeks, you are supposed to evaluate, and learn from the experience, and tweak your method to get the best performance。 I have found his method to be very helpful。 Now, I want to experiment with losing some bad habits。 I love that he has helpful advice for parents and managers as well。 It is possible to help other people using his methods, even if they don't know exactly what you're doing。 I highly recommend the book to anyone who wants to develop better habits in their life, and/or help others do so。 。。。more

Excellent! If you have an aspiration - let the Fogg Method help you achieve it。。。。 This book is for everyone。

Of the three habits books I’ve read, this one might be the most practical。 Habit recipes and behavior designs are all supported by Fogg’s research at Stanford。 Not sure a book by itself to self-improvement will be the best approach, but a good starting point。

I enjoyed the book, there is a lot of information to think about and unpack。 It's definitely worth reading and worth implementing the ideas set by the author。 The explanations on some of our human behaviors were really interesting to read about, and the idea of taking basically baby steps in the direction you want to go is great advice, and I appreciate the clarity and detail in which he approaches his ideas。 Negatives, I thought it was a bit long and while I enjoyed the enthusiasm of the author I enjoyed the book, there is a lot of information to think about and unpack。 It's definitely worth reading and worth implementing the ideas set by the author。 The explanations on some of our human behaviors were really interesting to read about, and the idea of taking basically baby steps in the direction you want to go is great advice, and I appreciate the clarity and detail in which he approaches his ideas。 Negatives, I thought it was a bit long and while I enjoyed the enthusiasm of the author, I don't share the opinion that tiny habits can save the world, but maybe it can help lead us in the right direction。 。。。more

A great book。 It is full of insightful information about how to systematically develop a new habit。

Derek Boylen

Great indepth exploration of the art of behaviour change and how to do it! :)

Allie

While a bit wordier than I found necessary, the author has a great point and method that seems achievable and applicable。 I’ve already started flossing daily。 :)

Shuva

Great book with compelling stories and practical tips。

Straight up 5-stars, an amazing self-help book as the author states various types of methods in one simple concept all in the same system。 It is very easy to understand if you're not a heavy reader and the author even have tons of I-think maps to guide you throughout your reading journey。 I am already starting out my tiny habits and although the seeds haven't solidly planted on the soil, I am still trying to keep up with the new routines in my life, it works for everyone in any any time, anywher Straight up 5-stars, an amazing self-help book as the author states various types of methods in one simple concept all in the same system。 It is very easy to understand if you're not a heavy reader and the author even have tons of I-think maps to guide you throughout your reading journey。 I am already starting out my tiny habits and although the seeds haven't solidly planted on the soil, I am still trying to keep up with the new routines in my life, it works for everyone in any any time, anywhere in any situation and that is what I like about this book。 It stretches out your thinking zone。 。。。more

This book took SO LONG TO READ。 probably was not smart to leave it for my bedtime reading lol。 There was a lot of information, a lot that went straight into my brain and then out again, but the main points of Tiny Habits really intrigue me and I find myself thinking about them a lot as I go through my day。 I plan to try many of his methods out!

The best development book I have read, and I’ve read hundreds。 BJ takes something quite abstract - the desire to change - and breaks it down into a practical, tangible relatable and well researched process。 I can see loads of applications for this。

Francisco Ravenclaw

Great ideas, terrible examples。

Eddie Lee

I like the modularity of the approach but felt Atomic Habits was more crisply and clearly written。

Cherie

A must read。 Provides tools to accomplish goals that seem elusive。

KHoopMan

Anchor moment + tiny new behavior = change over time

Stephanie Miller

Some of it was a little hard to follow。 I think I’d have had an easier time if I actually had put in the energy of writing out my own situations and applied myself to it。 Reading this book is not enough。 Definitely need to do some journaling and get into it

Jackeline G Nowell

3 1/2 stars。 The advice in the book is so simple, yet brilliant。 My main complaint is how repetitive it is, but I understand that he really wanted to drive the point home。 Overall it is easy to remember and B。J did a great job at explaining the reasoning behind his arguments。

This is a fine topic as a guest on a podcast- but as a full length book it was stretched。

This is the best book I’ve read on habits! The book is full of technical points about habit formation with lucid illustrations。 This is my fourth book for the topic habit and it is worthwhile reading the book。

Kathie Newell

This book was WAY MORE than I needed it to be!! WOW! 😬。 If you want to learn everything there is to know about behavior modification, this is the book for you。 But it was way too deep for the small changes I was hoping to work on。

Nam A

Good read to understand how we can form habits or break them。 Though a larger book, I felt it was presented in a fairly concise way。

Brooke

Great concept, over written book。 I really enjoyed learning about Tiny Habits and plan to incorporate them into my life。 I did not enjoy reading this book though。 It was too lengthy for the information provided and I found myself losing engagement。 I would’ve enjoyed it more if the information was more succinct and/or engaging。

Csimplot Simplot

Excellent book!!!

Steven Haiser

Very informative but a slow readI think this information is so important。 There are so many moving parts through the book。 I actually thought James Clear’s , Atomic Habits was an easier book to read。 I am sure James used this material as source material。 That being said I believe if you start slow you can benefit from this book。

Siobhan O

Atomic Habits is my holy grail for habit design but this book is a very close second。 I really like the concept of starting small with behaviours and Fogg talks about celebration when you complete even the smallest habit。 I hadn’t thought of the celebration piece before and the impact it can have so that was a huge learning from this book。 Definitely would recommend if you are looking at improving your life through habits。
